Grants Youth Components
The Grants Program provides support for the youth and educational programming of our local arts and social service agencies, by artists, and in neighborhoods throughout the community. Half of TPAC's over 71 grantee organizations and rural project grants include youth and arts education components in their programming.
Examples of 2007-2008 non-profit organization arts education awardees:
- The Drawing Studio/The Art of Summer: offering intensive studio art programs for teens, developing perceptual-kinesthetic skills to produce skilled visual thinkers and communicators who can apply these skills to an array of 21st century challenges.
- Sharmoore Children’s Productions/Stories That Soar!: empowering children to believe in themselves by giving voice to their words and ideas. Using student generated writing, Sharmoore artists turn their stories into theater productions that include puppetry, poetry, masks and dance.
- Tucson Symphony Orchestra/Music Education Program: students are introduced to classical music and orchestral instruments developing music literacy and music composition.
Youth Scholarships
The Pima County Youth Arts Award program identifies, recognizes and encourages talented high school seniors in Pima County who demonstrate excellence in Dance, Music, Theater, Visual Arts, Media Arts, or Literary Arts. Recipients win scholarships between $1000 and $2000 to Pima Community College towards an Associates Degree in the Arts. This unique collaboration between Pima Community College, the Tucson Pima Arts Council, and others has provided dozens of young people with the means to begin their college educations.
The judging panel reviews videos, cassettes, slides and manuscripts and evaluates the work based on artistic quality. Their decision is based on originality, style, composition and context.
Every year scholarship recipients are recognized at the Crystal Apple Awards Luncheon hosted by the Metropolitan Education Commission.
